Walkway intent

How much concrete do I need for a walkway?

Walkways are narrow slabs, so the estimate is mainly length multiplied by width and thickness, with a small allowance for waste.

Best for

  • Garden paths
  • Side walks
  • Narrow slabs
Worked example

A 12 m by 1.2 m walkway at 0.1 m thickness

Walkways are easy to price once you convert the full shape into cubic meters and add a modest waste allowance.

Example

12 m × 1.2 m × 0.1 m = 1.44 m3. With 7 percent waste, the adjusted order volume is 1.54 m3.

Formula

Volume = length × width × thickness

Adjusted volume = volume × (1 + waste / 100)

Walkway planning tips

Use consistent width

If the path changes width, split it into sections and total them separately.

Watch the edges

Narrow paths often lose material at the sides and around joints.

Round up slightly

A small allowance helps cover the extra material used during finishing.
