Trench excavation volume
Sum the geometric in-situ volume of constant-section trench segments without hidden bulking or safety factors.
How to use this calculator
How to measure
Split the trench whenever width or depth changes. Measure centreline length only if it represents the intended rectangular segment; otherwise use the actual segment length.
Worked example
A 2 m × 0.5 m × 1 m segment is 1 m³ and a 3 m × 1 m × 0.5 m segment is 1.5 m³, for 2.5 m³ total in situ.
Formula and method
Segment volume = length × width × depth. Total in-situ volume is the safe sum of segment volumes; no allowance is applied.
Assumptions
- Every segment has a constant rectangular cross-section.
- Dimensions represent the excavation in place.
Limitations
- No bulking, compaction, side slopes, water, shoring or trench safety.
- No haulage, truck count or disposal mass.
FAQ
Is this loose excavated volume?
No. It is only geometric in-situ volume.
Can widths vary?
Create a separate segment at every width or depth change.
