Flat roof guide: area, membrane and insulation quantities

Length times width gives the horizontal footprint of a rectangular roof. Ordering membrane or insulation also needs the measured surface area, edge details, upstands, penetrations, required overlaps and usable coverage of each roll or pack.

Measure surfaces and details separately

Aplan = length × width; Aslope = Aplan / cos(θ)

Include the actual covered roof and overhangs. For one known slope, the cosine formula converts horizontal projection to surface area. A perfectly horizontal 8 m by 5 m field is 40 m². Flat roofs still need drainage falls. Changing slopes, tapered insulation and upstands need separate measurements. Subtract openings only when the product layout actually saves material.

Distinguish coverage, overlap and waste

Aorder = Ameasured × (1 + allowance / 100); packs = ceil(Aorder / usable pack coverage)

Read effective product coverage, including seam laps where stated, and avoid counting laps twice. Estimate cuts, spare material and detail pieces separately. An allowance is a project input, not a universal recommendation. With an illustrative 10% allowance, 40 m² becomes 44 m². At 12 m² usable coverage per roll, four rolls provide 48 m².

Check drainage, waterproofing and insulation

Inspect outlet positions, overflow provision, finished falls, penetrations and edge terminations. Ponding and deflection cannot be solved by adding an ordering allowance. Insulation thickness and continuity need the thermal method and roof design; membrane area does not determine thickness. Product and system instructions control seams, upstands, fixing and compatible layers.

Keep a clear quantity schedule

Record net field area, separate detail areas, usable coverage, the allowance and rounded quantity. Use the linked roof membrane-roll calculator for purchasing or the roofing calculator to convert a known projection and pitch. Recalculate after changing dimensions or product coverage. Keep a dated product sheet with the quantity schedule and review the roof system with the responsible designer.

Result scope

This covers simple area and purchase arithmetic. It does not design drainage, structure, fire performance, condensation control or waterproof details. Upstands and details are additional measured items unless explicitly included in your input.
